About the event

Lorina's group develops novel and clinically applicable neural markers of healthy and disordered cognition in healthy aging and patient populations. The PREVENT programme aims to establish novel and clinically applicable early biomarkers of Alzheimer’s disease in midlife, 20 to 40 years prior to its clinical diagnosis. Recent studies show that if implemented in midlife, interventions that target modifiable risk factors could prevent up to 30% of dementia cases in the next two decades. However, the indicators of the disease process in mid-life are poorly understood and must urgently be established. The early biomarkers of Alzheimer’s disease that this programme hopes to develop will serve as essential prerequisites to future, population-wide early intervention programs, both pharmaceutical and environmental. Therefore, this work has tremendous potential to improve early detection, treatment and ultimately lead to the prevention of Alzheimer’s dementia. The Prevent programme at TCD is carried out in collaboration with Cambridge, Oxford,  Edinburgh universities, Imperial College London in the UK and the INSERM Neuroscience, in France.
